Our Mission Statement
The South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council, a community-based organization, will strive to assist youth, ages 6-18, who are struggling in school, in their quest to improve basic reading, writing, and math skills, so that they may enjoy full participation as citizens in the community.
What We Do
The Youth Literacy Program offers one-to-one tutoring for school-aged children from six to eighteen years, helping them with any school subject in which they are having difficulty. The majority of the students struggle with reading, writing and math. They are either referred to us via their parents, teachers or social agencies. We work in partnership with the schools and libraries to help kids succeed. Each learner is matched to an individual program to meet their specific needs. We have active tutor matches linked from Flesherton to Port Elgin. Math coaching and study sessions for high school students are offered.
How We Help
The Youth Literacy Program has provided free confidential tutoring to youth in the south Grey Bruce Region since 1992. With our volunteer tutors, we support children to succeed in school by bringing them up to grade level while boosting their confidence and raising their self-esteem. Our volunteers receive tutor training, and security checks and are supplied with excellent learning materials for tutoring.
Our Outreach Program
We maintain our free learning resources library and provide advocacy for parents of children with learning exceptionalities. In addition to our primary mandate of encouraging and enabling basic literacy and numeracy for children through direct support, we collaborate and design events which contribute to cultural literacy in our area. We understand that creative self-expression is linked to mental and physical health and self-esteem, and therefore are as crucial to success in school as in other areas of life.
How You Can Help
- We welcome volunteers! If you can offer an hour a week, we will train you as a tutor.
- Become involved! Enhance your resume. Earn community service hours for high school.
- Donations are always gratefully accepted and we will issue an income tax receipt.
- Gently used books and learning games are valuable additions to our library.
